Arcachon, a city shaped by time

The city of Arcachon was not always described this way—quite the contrary. It is only very recently, since the 1920s, that it definitively established its status as a must-visit seaside resort and, consequently, a major city.

Until the establishment of a seaside hotel in 1823 and the arrival of the railway line connecting the basin to Bordeaux in 1841, Arcachon was a relatively isolated small fishing village where a few huts allowed fishermen to store their gear and rest between trips to sea.

In a landscape that was still relatively deserted, composed of dunes and pine forests, François Legallais's seaside bathing establishment began to shape the horizon, attracting more and more people who decided to build second homes on the coast. Little by little, the insignificant fishing village transformed into a seaside resort for a wealthy clientele.

The Arcachon panorama, with its nascent seafront, was finally completed with the discovery of the Sainte Anne des Abatilles spring in 1923. The exploration of this pure water source, which revealed therapeutic benefits, gave the new city a new vocation: natural mineral water production.
