Last week, Welkeys introduced you to Alpe d’Huez and its highly sought-after resort. Today, it is time to discover a new mountain destination with us: the magnificent village of Megève and its splendid ski area!
Discover the village of Megève and its ski area
Located in Haute-Savoie and surrounded by three mountain ranges, the village of Megève is imbued with an authenticity that will charm visitors of all ages, in both summer and winter. A true gathering place for locals and visitors alike, the main square hosts a variety of festivities and events throughout the year. Its rich heritage and numerous cultural and sporting events make Megève a very popular destination for sports enthusiasts and nature lovers, just one hour from Geneva International Airport and two hours from Lyon!
Whether you are with friends or family, the Evasion Mont Blanc ski area offers activities for all ages and a spectacular setting for everyone, with its 324 hectares, 188 slopes, and 86 ski lifts. From slopes for all levels to a dedicated freestyle area, pine forests, alpine farms, dog sledding, a casino, a swimming pool, and an ice rink, everyone can enjoy a stay that suits them. This beautiful location has earned it the nickname "the Little Switzerland of the Alps."
Situated at an altitude of 1,000 meters, facing Mont Blanc, Megève also draws its charm from a long-standing tradition. Originally an agricultural town, the village has seen tourism develop while preserving its history, architecture, and values.
Just like Alpe d’Huez, Megève is also a wonderful place to relax, thanks to the Balnéoforme at Le Palais and other wellness centers. You can even enjoy a pleasant moment there during the Zen Evening organized on October 25th.
Enjoy a wealth of festive and friendly events
In addition to ice hockey championships and various introductory snow sports sessions, Megève and its ski area host a wide variety of events throughout the year.
During the summer, both sports and music take center stage. In June, an eight-kilometer race and a sixteen-kilometer race are offered as part of the Mégevanne. It’s a great opportunity for running and walking enthusiasts to get active in a setting that is both challenging and idyllic! Equestrian fans can admire the feats of riders competing in the Jumping International de Megève, which takes place on the esplanade of Le Palais. Finally, in August, the Blues Festival takes over the area. Several international artists take the stage for the enjoyment of the locals and tourists in attendance.
In autumn, it’s time for food lovers to rejoice! With over 70 restaurants, including four Michelin-starred ones, Megève is rightfully the capital of alpine gastronomy. From October 19th to 21st, a major culinary event will be held for the second time. Following its great success in 2018, the Toquicimes event returns this year to delight our taste buds. Whether you are a great cooking enthusiast or simply a foodie, you won't be able to resist the many activities and workshops centered around mountain cuisine, offered free of charge to the public. Also, discover the Megève market and its Savoyard specialties every Friday morning.
The holiday season is also celebrated in style in Megève. Starting December 7th, a majestic tree decorated by Swarovski will stand in the village square and be illuminated during a memorable evening. This event, highly appreciated by locals, marks the start of the Christmas festivities each year. For New Year's Eve, tradition and conviviality will be the order of the day with a torchlight descent performed by ski school instructors. It’s the perfect way to spend a pleasant New Year's Eve with the family!
On March 28th and 30th, 2020, the fifth edition of the International Jazz Festival will resonate throughout the Savoyard region. Featuring internationally renowned artists and a stage for young talent, the event will appeal to both jazz aficionados and singers and musicians looking to make a name for themselves. It’s a significant stepping stone, considering that Norah Jones, Eddy Mitchell, Macy Gray, and Selah Sue have already set the stage on fire during previous editions!
