From Pyla to Cap Ferret, not forgetting the oyster-farming villages of the bay: how to find the accommodation that truly suits your stay and your pace.

Between the Gironde moorlands and the Atlantic Ocean, the Arcachon Basin has established itself as one of the most sought-after destinations in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. According to the Intercommunal Syndicate of the Arcachon Basin (SIBA), the area totals approximately 10.8 million overnight stays per year, with rare loyalty: nearly 80% of visitors have been there at least once (source: Gironde Tourisme/BVA). In other words, people come back.

But the large inner bay covers ten municipalities and three very different coastlines. Dropping your bags in Arcachon, Cap Ferret, Andernos-les-Bains, or Gujan-Mestras makes for very different vacations. This guide lays the groundwork for choosing the right area, depending on the traveler's profile, budget, season, and your desired activities on-site.

‍

The Arcachon Basin in a few figures: a unique destination in the Southwest

The territory stretches over nearly 150 km² of lagoon, classified as a Marine Natural Park since 2014. It has 76 km of beach (ocean beaches on the Atlantic side and bay beaches on the inner side), which explains the diversity of atmospheres depending on the chosen sector (source: SIBA, Spring 2025 Tourism Data Collection).

In terms of nature, the Arcachon Basin Marine Natural Park protects more than 400 species of migratory birds, including the famous Eurasian spoonbills observable in the spring. The Dune of Pilat, the highest in Europe (106 m in 2024), welcomed 240,000 visitors on its access path in July 2025, an increase of 13.9% compared to 2024 (source: TVBA, August 2025).

The Arcachon Basin is also a territory alive with oyster farming. There are approximately 340 oyster-farming businesses spread over 7,000 hectares of oyster beds, with production ranging between 7,000 and 10,000 tons of cupped oysters per year (source: CAPENA, Arcachon Basin Oyster Observatory, 2023). The collective brand Huîtres Arcachon Cap Ferret protects this expertise, which has been recognized since 1855.

Finally, tourism here is primarily family-oriented: 58% of visitors come with their families (Gironde Tourisme/BVA). The choice of accommodation follows almost automatically.

Where to stay in the Arcachon Basin: the 5 main areas to know

‍

Arcachon and its waterfront: the historic seaside resort

As the central city of the Arcachon Bay, the town was born with the arrival of the railway in 1841. It goes from 12,000 inhabitants in winter to nearly 70,000 in summer, with up to 100,000 people present per day in July and August (source: City of Arcachon). The accommodation offer is dense: 954 establishments (26 hotels, 907 furnished rentals, 15 bed and breakfasts), or about 8,500 tourist beds.

Staying in Arcachon means choosing a real city by the sea. You can enjoy the Thiers pier, the beachfront, the covered market, the port of Arcachon, and the historic Ville d'Hiver district with its Belle Époque villas. A practical advantage: the Arcachon train station allows you to reach Bordeaux in less than an hour via the 29 daily round-trip TER trains. Perfect for a stay combining relaxation, heritage, and fine dining, for couples and travelers without a car. Discover more about the assets of Arcachon and our local agency.

‍

Pyla-sur-Mer and La Teste-de-Buch: at the foot of the Dune of Pilat

La Teste-de-Buch, the largest municipality in Gironde, encompasses the chic resort of Pyla-sur-Mer. It is here that the Dune of Pilat stands, at the gateway to the Banc d'Arguin and the Marine Natural Park. Two historic 5-star establishments have built the area's reputation, and you can also find beautiful architect-designed villas nestled between pine trees and the Atlantic Ocean. The resin-tapper huts, remnants of forestry work in the Landes forest, remind us that this territory was first a land of wood and resin before becoming a seaside resort.

At the port of La Teste and in the neighboring oyster ports, the maritime ambiance immerses the traveler in the authentic atmosphere of the Basin. This sector is suitable for families looking for wide-open spaces, surfing enthusiasts (ocean beaches behind the Dune), and those looking for a vacation home with a garden under the pines rather than an apartment in the city center.

‍

Lège-Cap Ferret: the wild peninsula

The Ferret peninsula stretches 25 km of land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Arcachon Basin. It is the most "cabin-like" side of the territory. The oyster-farming villages (L'Herbe, Piraillan, Le Canon, Grand and Petit Piquey) line up their colorful wooden cabins along the shore, heirs to the original fishing villages. The Cap Ferret lighthouse, with its red and white stripes, reveals a 360° panorama of the Arcachon Bay and the Dune of Pilat opposite.

The Ferret peninsula is a paradise for cycling: 60 km of bike paths cross the municipality from north to south (source: Lège-Cap Ferret Tourist Office). It is also a key sector for pleasure boating, with dry ports and highly sought-after moorings. This territory appeals to family vacations, groups of friends, and fans of trips in a pinasse, the traditional boat of the Arcachon Basin, still manufactured in local shipyards. Warning: in high season, traffic jams on the D106 can make the trip from Arcachon take up to 1 hour and 30 minutes (30 minutes by water shuttle from the Thiers pier).

‍

Arès and Andernos-les-Bains: the Northeast coast, quiet and family-friendly

Arès and Andernos-les-Bains border the northeast side of the Basin. You will find very quiet bay beaches there, perfectly suited for young children: no waves, safe swimming at high tide, and golden sand. Andernos-les-Bains has one of the longest piers in France (232 m) and a market that is lively all year round. The Espace Brémontier in Arès and the La Dolce Vita theater in Andernos provide evening entertainment, even in the low season.

When it comes to budget, this area remains more affordable than Arcachon or Cap Ferret. Vacation rentals here are often beautiful family homes with gardens. Arès also provides access to the Vélodyssée, the Atlantic cycling route that starts in Lège-Cap Ferret and crosses the region all the way to La Teste-de-Buch. It is ideal for a quiet, active family getaway without the tourist pressure.

‍

Gujan-Mestras, Le Teich, Audenge, Lanton, and Biganos: the interior of the Bay, the authentic side

The five municipalities grouped under the "Cœur du Bassin" label (the official name of their joint Tourist Office) cover the southern and interior shores of the bay. Gujan-Mestras, the capital of oyster farming, alone boasts 7 oyster ports, a record for the region. The port of Larros houses the Maison de l'Huître, a museum space dedicated to the industry. Le Teich is home to the famous bird sanctuary, 120 hectares where you can observe more than 300 species of birds, including many migratory ones.

Audenge, Lanton, and Biganos focus on nature-based and local tourism. The Domaine de Certes et Graveyron (135 hectares, 126,758 visitors in 2023 according to the SIBA), a former salt marsh turned protected natural area, is one of the best family hikes. This sector is perfect for those looking for a quiet, green family vacation with good value for money. It is a smart alternative to avoid the summer overcrowding of the southern and western shores, while remaining just 20 minutes by car or regional train from the major iconic sites.

Must-see attractions during your vacation in the Arcachon Bay

A stay here is about more than just lounging around. Here are the experiences you absolutely must fit into your schedule:

  • The Dune of Pilat: 106m high, accessible all year round. Visit early in the morning or at sunset to avoid the summer crowds. The tchanquées cabins of the Île aux Oiseaux: these two stilt houses in the center of Arcachon Bay can be discovered by boat, ideally at high tide, in a traditional pinasse from the port of Arcachon or Cap Ferret. The Banc d'Arguin: a nature reserve opposite Pyla, accessible by boat. A shifting blonde sand beach and a protected colony of sandwich terns. Only authorized boats may dock there. The Teich Bird Sanctuary: 6 km of trails, 20 observation points, best enjoyed as a family in the spring or autumn during migrations. The Cap Ferret Lighthouse: 258 steps and a 360° view. Pair this with a stroll through the oyster-farming village of L'Herbe and its surprising Algerian-style chapel, which is a listed heritage site. Cycling around the Bay: about 80 km via the Vélodyssée and the Bay's bike paths. The region has 44 "Accueil Vélo" certified providers, including 27 accommodations and 8 rental shops (source: SIBA, 2025). An oyster tasting in an oyster shack: the quintessential local ritual. Oyster farmers have significantly transformed their practices in 2025 by systematically using purification tanks, ensuring the sanitary quality of the products (source: Côte Noroît Oyster Farmers Association, August 2025). An oyster or fishing tide: embark for 3 to 5 hours aboard a professional boat. A list is available at the Tourist Office of each municipality.

The 2026 calendar of major events not to be missed

The Arcachon Bay off-season

‍

Mainstream travel guides all tout the same things: July, August, and the crowded Dune of Pilat. We suggest the opposite. SIBA data is clear: the high tourist season is concentrated over eight weeks, while the region remains open twelve months a year. Visiting in the spring, in September, or in winter radically changes the experience of your stay:

  • March–April: the mimosas are in full bloom around Arcachon Bay, migratory birds return to the Teich Sanctuary, terraces reopen, and Arcachon Cap Ferret oysters are still in their prime tasting season. May–June: the Dune of Pilat site records much lower attendance than in summer (source: TVBA, 2025), which is ideal for a quiet morning stroll. The beaches are empty or nearly so, and the water is still cool but swimmable for the brave. September–October: often the best month to enjoy Arcachon Bay. The water reaches its warmest temperature of the year, vacation rental rates drop by 30 to 50%, and the sunsets over Cap Ferret are among the most beautiful. December–February: a quiet period, Christmas oysters at their peak, mimosas blooming as early as January, and illuminations in Arcachon. Perfect for a long romantic weekend.
