Tourism in Luberon

Luberon is a territory in the south-east of France and part of Provence. It includes areas with different identities: Pays d'Apt, Pays d'Aigues, Luberon Monts de Vaucluse and Pays de Forcalquier.

These areas offer travelers an incredible range of landscapes to discover during walks and hikes. From the Mourre Nègre ("black snout") massif to the Cavalon valley, there are plenty of adventures to be experienced.

Nature lovers will be conquered by the regional natural park of Luberon which counts a beautiful diversity of natural environments. Cliffs and plateaus stand alongside garrigues and pine forests. Butterfly and bird lovers will not be left out with species such as the Egyptian vulture or the black grouse.

One of the sites not to be missed in the region is undoubtedly the Colorado Provençal. This former industrial site was exploited until the 1990s. It then became a tourist site worthy of a western setting. Different paths have been set up so that everyone can appreciate the nuances of ochre.

Another characteristic of the Luberon are the perched villages. The visit of Roussillon, Lacoste or Ménerbes is a must. Visitors stroll through the streets to appreciate the old stone houses and the sweetness of life in Provence.

On the historical side, the Luberon has a number of castles. The castle in Oppède, which has been abandoned, offers a setting lost in time. The castle of Lourmarin, enlarged during the Renaissance, and that of Ansouis, whose keep dates from the 10th century, are worth a visit. The castle of Lacoste, which was the residence of the Marquis de Sade, offers a beautiful view of the surroundings.

Historical buildings are not limited to castles: the region is full of beautiful churches overlooking the perched villages. The abbey of Notre Dame de Sénanque is a must-see. The ancient building stands in the middle of a beautiful lavender field.

The more athletic will appreciate the hikes that will take them to the heart of the beautiful Provencal landscapes. For a change from walking, the Cavalon cycling path offers bike rides suitable for all ages. One of the jewels of this path is the Julien bridge, an ancient stone bridge with three arches.

As for gastronomy and flavors, the Luberon is a real treasure. On the local markets and in the restaurants, the local products are in the spotlight. The must-tries are the melon (from Cavaillon), the cherry, the Muscat du Ventoux, the truffles, the olive oil, the saffron, the AOC Côtes du Rhône, AOC Ventoux or AOC Luberon wines.

Luberon and short-term rentals

Luberon, with its picturesque villages and natural attractions, is an ideal region for vacation rentals. Many of these villages host short-term rentals: Lourmarin, Cucuron and Pertuis have between 70 and 140 units dedicated to this activity.

The income associated with short-term rentals varies according to the location and the type of property. In Pertuis, the average price per night is around 100 euros, while in Cucuron it is over 180 euros. These prices also vary throughout the year: they peak in the spring, with an average of up to 247 euros in Cucuron in April, but drop in the winter with an average of 86 euros in Pertuis in February.

The yearly occupancy rate is interesting depending on the village. In Pertuis, the average yearly occupancy rate is 65%. It jumps during summer, with average monthly occupancy rates of 81% and 89% in Lourmarin and Pertuis respectively.

The region includes a wide variety of properties. In Lourmarin, there are as many one-room apartments as four-bedroom apartments. In Cucuron, 21% of the properties have more than 5 bedrooms, while in Pertuis, 33% have only one bedroom. There are therefore many rental possibilities.

The average length of stay can vary from one night to one month. In Lourmarin, the average is more like 2 to 3 nights. In Pertuis, on the other hand, 50% of the rentals are for 5 days up to a full month.
